A wedding photographer in Goa is working two jobs at once: the wedding, and a short holiday that happens to have a wedding in it. Guests arrive across three or four days, the events spread between a resort, a beach and sometimes a church, and half the pictures people actually keep are from the parts nobody scheduled. We have shot Goa weddings since 2009 and we plan for the gaps as deliberately as the ceremonies.

North Goa or South Goa

The choice changes the whole shape of the coverage. North Goa — Candolim, Vagator, Anjuna, Sinquerim — is busier, better connected and easier for guests flying in, and the beaches are shared with everybody else, which means crowd management is part of the job. South Goa around Cavelossim, Varca and Palolem is quieter and more resort-contained, so a barefoot mandap on the sand is genuinely private, but distances between venues are longer and dinner options thin out. Old Goa and Panjim are where the Catholic church weddings happen, with their own timings and their own rules about what a photographer may do during the ceremony.

Light, and why the schedule matters here

Coastal light is unforgiving between eleven and four. It is bright, contrasty and directly overhead, and no amount of editing recovers a midday beach ceremony that should have been at five. The compensation is the twenty minutes before sunset, which on the Goan west coast is as good as light gets in India. When couples ask us to look at their schedule before it is fixed, this is usually the only thing we push back on.

What a Goa wedding week usually looks like

Most run three or four days. Guests arrive and there is a welcome dinner nobody plans to photograph and everybody later wants pictures of. Then a haldi or mehendi in a resort courtyard through the middle of the day, the ceremony itself late in the afternoon, and a reception that moves to the pool or the sand after dark. Somewhere in there is a morning with nothing scheduled, when everyone is at their most relaxed and least aware of a camera, and a surprising share of the frames people keep come from exactly that. We staff for the whole stretch rather than the ceremony alone.

Permissions and practicalities

Beaches in Goa are public. A resort can hold the stretch directly in front of it for a private event, but the sand beyond that belongs to everyone, and drone use in particular is restricted in places and near airports. Confirm with the venue in writing what is permitted rather than assuming, because it is not a conversation you want to be having on the morning. Most resorts have done this many times and will tell you plainly.

When to come

November to February is peak season: dry, clear and expensive, with rates and availability to match. March and October are shoulder months and often the better value if you can accept some heat or a late shower. June to September is the monsoon — genuinely beautiful, genuinely green, and not a serious proposition for an outdoor wedding. Most of our Goa couples are based elsewhere — Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, or abroad — and we travel in with the team rather than subcontracting locally, which matters when the wedding runs across several days and you would rather not meet a new photographer on day two.
